The Project

A twenty-two room retreat near the Philosopher's Path, built on the Japanese idea that shadow is a material. Concrete and cedar hold the structure; washi and blackened steel soften it. Corridors are kept deliberately dim so that each room arrives as a release of light.

We worked with Kyoto joiners for six months on the guest-room screens alone. The building asks guests to slow down — to notice the grain of the wood, the depth of a reveal, the sound of water in the courtyard.

“We designed the darkness first, so the light would have somewhere to arrive.”
